The Last Chapter Writing Assignment in Google Classroom

The Last Chapter Writing Assignment

Student directions: Imagine that Lois Lowry wrote one more chapter of The Giver. Your task is to create your own ending to the book by writing Chapter 24. Review the 8 types of endings and the rubric attached to this assignment.
Due October 10, 2025
Requirements:
Length: 1–3 pages
Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced
Title: “Chapter 24” (centered at the top of the page)
Style: Your chapter should sound like Lois Lowry’s writing. This means:
Use descriptive language and imagery.
Keep a reflective, thoughtful tone.
Stay true to the characters and themes of the story.
Believability: Your ending must make sense with what already happened in the novel. Think about the events in Chapter 23 and continue them in a realistic way.
What to Include: Jonas’s Experience: What happens to him after the sled ride? Does he find safety, community, or something else?
Resolution: How does the story end for Jonas, Gabriel, and possibly the community he left behind?
Themes: Consider the big ideas in the novel (freedom, memory, individuality, choice, love, pain). Your ending should connect to at least one of these themes.
Details: Include sensory descriptions (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) to make your chapter feel vivid and real.
Tips for Success:
Reread the last pages of Chapter 23 before writing to refresh your memory of the mood and imagery.
Plan your ending before you begin. Think: What message do I want the reader to leave with?
Write in complete sentences, proofread for grammar, and check that your ending flows smoothly.
Final Check Before Turning In:
My chapter is 1–3 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman.
I used descriptive details and kept the style similar to Lois Lowry’s.
My ending connects to the story and feels believable.
I edited and proofread for spelling, grammar, and clarity.
Reminder: This is an academic writing assignment. It is your opportunity to to demonstrate your understanding of the novel's themes, style, and characters while showing your academic writing skills.
